After gaining skill and experience to a proficient level, "pretty good" often becomes "good enough," especially if no one is complaining. If the customers are happy, and what you are doing seems to work, there is often little to drive further experimentation. The world of hot rods has changed ever so perceptibly in favor of the younger (younger feeling?), more active rodder. In the past few years that Goodguys has embraced the '64-and-up muscle car audience, their ranks have swelled with street machines, Pro Touring muscle cars, and even the occasional '70s disco-bumper machine. Yeah, we even sneak our project cars into the mix, and nobody seems to mind. That's a far cry from the geriatrics of past years. Add in a Street Challenge autocross track, and the youngsters are hangin' on the fence by the hundreds.
EFI For Any Guy - 3 Common EFI FallaciesEFI Fallacy: Tuning EFI Requires A ProEFI Fallacy: Tuning EFI Requires A Pro Reality: There are systems intended for pro racers and tuners that will probably require professional help, but the latest trend in consumer-level EFI systems is super user-friendly tuning requiring little to no previous experience to dial the system to near perfection. Matter of fact, some of the kits in EFI For Every Guy in the October 2010 issue of PHR are designed to be completely self-learning, meaning the only tuning they need is to be driven. The software will adjust itself to the engine’s demands based on sensor readings and your driving style. To be perfectly honest, it’s actually much more difficult to truly tune a carburetor to peak efficiency with highest possible emulsion and correct air/fuel ratio and keep it there. That’s why high-end race carbs cost much. Photo Gallery: EFI For Any Guy - Popular Hot Rodding MagazineEFI For Any Guy - 3 Common EFI Fallacies |
Growing up in a small town in Ohio, it's not too hard to keep tabs on what's going on. Steve noticed a handful of what he would later identify as Corvettes in the local mechanic's lot. Still very young, his parents didn't want him venturing out too far on his bicycle, so he would pedal down to the shop as fast as he could to fake a close-by trip, but end up at Frank Duff's shop. Duff and his work quickly became the focus of Steve's life. He spent as much time spying on Duff's work as he could. Steve was endlessly grateful that Duff obliged his visits and even took the time to answer the hundreds of questions an eager 10-year-old might ask. It would be a long time before Steve could afford a car like the ones Duff had! When he was 16, Steve worked at the local Chevy dealership through his high school's vocational program, and got to work on Corvettes as they came off the truck.October 2010 Under Construction |
Michael Beck, foreman for a concrete company, had been drawn to the early '60s trucks, and wanted to build a serious drag truck that was legal on the street. He's owned the car since the beginning of 1986 and drove it as-purchased until the straight-six engine expired. He quickly put together a 350 small-block Chevy with a nice set of ported iron heads, rowdy solid cam, aluminum intake, and a double-pumper Holley carb. He raced this combination for over four years before one of the rods decided to leave the motor through the side of the block. With funds low at the time, he had to park it for 10 years before he could get back to it.October 2010 Hometown Hot Rodding |

October 2010 New ProductsDakota Digital has begun releasing a new line of gauges called VHX, with its first design for the timeless '57 Chevy.Ignition: MSD HEI Module There's no denying that an HEI ignition system is the easiest and least expensive way to get your engine project fired. That's not the same as saying it's cheap, just less costly than the alternative of a separate distributor, stand-alone coil, and stand-alone CD ignition box. An entry-level, off-shore HEI distributor suitable for a hot street application is still about $160 if you do some shrewd shopping. But what if you could endow a new or rebuilt stock HEI with the power of today's top racing ignitions? That's where MSD's Heat digital HEI module (PN 83647) comes in. For about $126 (typical Summit Racing mail-order price) you can plug this baby into your existing stock HEI (it's a direct plug-in using the stock four-pin connector) and produce up to 7.5 amps of current at up to 9,000 rpm. MSD's Heat module also has a built-in adjustable rev-limiter ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 rpm. You'll dig the stealthy stock look too! The answer to this can vary depending on the goals of a buildup, but there are several factors that apply to a big slice of us regular-guy hot rodders. We see lots of cost-no-object buildups-you know, the thing where just the carb costs a month's pay. Building such an engine front to back costs several times more than your street project sitting in the garage. For guys with that kind of budget, there are plenty of choices, but if the spare cash is thin, all you can do is flip the page and dream. What about a big-block Chevy that uses affordable parts and hits like a wrecking ball when the throttle is stomped? That was the idea behind the Street Brawler 496.
David Kauffung 308 Chevy Small Block Rebuild - Recycled PowerThis Engine Masters Challenge Competitor Took The Extreme Budget Route When He Built A Discarded 305 Into A Thrifty, Powerful Street Engine. When David Kauffung, a jeweler by trade, decided to build an engine for the Engine Masters Challenge, he was decidedly pleased with the format allowing any production engine to compete at the factory bore and stroke (plus tolerance). What he had was a limited budget, and a well used 305 that had been lying around for years. The old engine even sat out in the weather, but a thick coating of grease had protected the bores since the mill was pulled from an old Nova. David says: "The heads were off, and I noticed the bores looked pretty good, so I covered them with grease for protection in case I ever wanted to use the old block one day." That day finally came when David was considering what to build for the EMC competition. The old 305 had a couple of things going for it as far as David was concerned. He tells us: "The 305 Chevy has one of the longest stroke-to-cubic-inch ratios of any engine, which is a plus for low-end, and I already had it." In that time, the promoters did a fine job growing the series in concert with Super Chevy magazine. For 2010, however, the Super Chevy Shows are under new management-a consortium of some of the biggest and best drag racing venues across the country. Among them are The Strip at Las Vegas, Virginia Motorsports Park, Texas Motorplex, Summit Motorsports Park, Maple Grove Raceway, Houston Raceway Park, Bandimere Speedway, Heartland Park, Bristol Dragway, and Firebird International Raceway. These guys really know how to put on a show because they're in the people-pleasing business. We discovered firsthand just how good the "new and improved" Super Chevy Show was when we caravanned up to the year's first event in Las Vegas this past March 19-21.
