Chevelle Brakes - Whoa Down
When it comes to performance upgrades, we all want
to make the number; if we're talking stopping distances, we want that number to be small. But it's
too easy to focus on the end product rather than the nature of the improvement. For example, we often
evaluate braking prowess in terms of simple stopping distance--how rapidly, measured in feet, does
the vehicle decelerate from 60 mph to zero? And of course, we were looking for substantially shorter
stopping distances when we called on Performance Online (POL) to outfit a big-block-packing Chevelle
with its 13-inch big brake kit up front, accompanied by 12-inch rear discs to replace the factory
drums, and the necessary master cylinder/prop valve combo to run it. And while we did cut our
stopping distances, the fact that we converted this A-body from manual to power brakes by installing...

1969 Chevy Chevelle SS 396 - The Right Stuff
Those authentic American Racing wheels from
back in the day say it all. Dennis Sewell thrives on real '60s speed equip-ment, musclecars, and
most importantly the correct look. So when this factory L78 SS 396 Chevelle hit the classifieds, he
had to have it. After a quick call to the owner, who lived 350 miles away, Dennis and his musclecar
buddy Frank Saenz fueled up a car hauler and headed north on California's I-5. Just after 10
that morning they stood in the driveway next to the Garnet Red Chevelle. The road trip proved
rewarding when they found this pristine example fitted with a solid-lifter Rat, a Holley carb, an
aluminum intake, rectangular-port heads, and an M22 transmission. Dennis told us, The
matching-numbers 375-horse 396 looked great, but the original chambered pipes were shot and sounded...

1970 Chevelle Frontend Revival
Sometimes you own the project and sometimes,
unfortunately, the project owns you. Case in point:The '70 Chevelle shown here started out as a
potential grudge-night brawler, only to be abandoned after the funds ran dry. Prior to sitting on
the sidelines, a freshened 502ci big-block was dropped in between the rails and the entire frontend
was removed in anticipation of being upgraded with new sheetmetal. Suffice it to say, years down the
road it still needed a face-lift-among other things. These days, the once idle 'Velle is in
capable hands of a new owner, and he has little intention of reviving the dragstrip theme. Instead,
we're talking street thumper with the occasional open-track jaunts. Don't expect a trailer queen
asking to be pampered with A/C. We're starting by giving the ol' ride a new look with fresh...

1969 Chevelle Metal Transplant
When you come right down to it, we have the same
hopes for our classic Chevys' steel bodies as we do for our own flesh and bones. We want both to
look good, and we want them to be disease- and injury-free. If something does go wrong, we hope the
cure is minor: a pill, an ointment, maybe a little rubbing compound. Unfortunately, some maladies
require major surgery to cure, and automotively speaking, rust is second only to catastrophic
collision when it comes to bodily health. The bottom line is this: When rust has eaten all the way
through a body panel, the only answer is to excise the affected area and replace it with new
metal. Of course, many areas affected by rust in our favorite musclecars are part of the
structure, meaning old metal must be cut away and new metal welded into place. Add in the fact that...

1965 Chevrolet Chevelle - The White Bomb
 When you were a
high school kid, you had to have wheels, but even if you didn't, you always knew someone who did and
became their best pal whether you liked them or not. The four O'Conell boys had it made. Jim was the
oldest and therefore held the ticket to the universe-a white '65 four-door Chevelle with a red vinyl
gut. They shared it for nearly a decade ('70 through '78). It carried them to school as well as
every game, dance, and party. They never forgot the camaraderie. Or the car. By modern
standards, that saloon had nothing going for it, except that it ran and took them wherever they
wanted to go. It was a spartan sled, no air, no power anything, bench seats, and
three-on-the-tree-but the boys did find cultural enrichment by hanging an eight-track tape player...
