And by badass, I mean the guys who build and own them are not afraid to drive the crap out of them. The cars in this issue are all from the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational, which took place right after the 2011 SEMA show in Las Vegas. What I believe we’re seeing here with these cars is a reinvention of Pro Touring that reminds me a lot of its early days.
The new Ride a 100% Complete NO more project cars here......

1977 Chevelle SE One of approximatly 51 ever produced from subcontracts thru GM motor division to boost sales of the Slagging Chevy Sales, The One I am getting is one of only supposed 10 that were Black on Black bucket seat cars and all but two that I have found were optioned with 350 /350th the other two were 305 cars he says were original but I have not found any data to back that claim up for all that I have found were 350 cars. Two were made with T-Tops only one has survived, The Chevelle SE was NOT a factory produced car. The SE was created by a company in Witchita, Kansas called Special Editions, Inc.
who modified a mere fifty-one (yes, 51!)

1977 Chevelle Malibus with aftermarket (not factory) goodies which included a front air dam, a rear spoiler, 60 series tires on Turbine II aluminum wheels and a special orange and yellow stripe package.

All fifty cars were either black, white or silver and were optioned with a 350/4bbl engine, these cars had a rear trunk lid spoiler that had CHEVELLE SE on the right hand end of the spoiler. The spoiler had yellow and orange pinstriping about 2 inches wide that went across the rear spoiler and down the sides of the car. Under the front bumper was a fiberglass ground effect type spoiler. One of these cars was delivered to Bill Southern Chevrolet in Newkirk, Oklahoma (no longer in business) and the car was white. I know the name of the original owner, but he doesn't know who owns the car now. The silver one was delivered to Charlie Cannon Chevrolet in Ponca City, Oklahoma (no longer under that name).

the white one Pictured is from a EBAY listing a few years back and since has disappeared back into the woodwork
A major turning point in this engine-building contest was factoring the scoring system to allow engines of widely varying displacements to compete fairly, rather than the rigid spec engine size of the early days. Then, we turned another major corner going into the 2011 event, dividing the competition into two distinct classes: Street and Xtreme. Skipping over the fine points that you can find in the rules on http://www.EngineMasters.com, the specs that make the Xtreme category include unlimited cast cylinder heads, valve lift, induction, and compression ratio, as well as a higher engine operating rpm for scoring. As always, the EMC scores the engines based upon average horsepower, but the Xtreme category ups the ante from the 2,500-6,500 range run in Street, to 3,500-7,500. With more liberal parts specifications and a higher rpm range, the stage was set for the wildest Engine Masters show ever. The drop-top Tri-Five Chevy presented before you doesn’t have a single piece of original GM sheetmetal, and it never rolled off of a GM assembly line, either. To some hot rodders, reproduction bodies are imposters by nature, but when it’s possible to create something that looks this good, what’s the big stink about anyway? Experi-Metal’s long-anticipated reproduction Tri-Five bodies are finally here, and as Ironworks Speed and Kustom’s crimson ’55 Chevy proves, it was definitely worth the wait. As with most fake bodies, its smoothly flowing lines and voluptuous curves are just about perfect, and things get even hotter beneath the skin. There you’ll find an aftermarket chassis, C6 aluminum suspension, an LS3 small-block, and a 4L60E overdrive. Whether you’re merely admiring it from afar or stomping on the loud pedal like a hooligan, the last thing you’ll care about is that this ’55 started out life incubating in a shipping crate. After all, the ’32 Ford—that stalwart staple of hot rodding—is something like 79 years ancient. Similarly, the ’55 Chevy has 56 trips around the sun under its belt, and the ’69 Camaro has a relatively scant 42 years on the clock. By some yardstick, you can make the argument that our favorite cars are genuinely old, but you’d be hard-pressed to say they’re over the hill. Please take that into consideration while you ponder that when the Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909, the ’32 Ford was 23 distant years in the future, and Oklahoma had only been a state for two years. OK, his full name was Daniel Bernoulli and it’s possible you may have heard of him. Besides being an uber-smart mathematician/statistician/physicist/author, he put into words the theory of why carburetors work. Of course, unless you are also an über-smart physicist, you might not get all the little details and decipher the squiggly lines in his writing. That means that when it’s time to bolt a brand-new, shiny fuel mixer on your bitchin 383 with double hump heads and three-quarter race cam, you’re better off talking with the tech guys at the company you bought it from in order to get it running to the best of its ability. PHR recently spoke with the top techies at Holley, Quick Fuel Technology, and Edelbrock in order to glean their most helpful hints and help you avoid the most common mistakes. In no particular order are the most common problems and suggested solutions. You see, in the neighborhood where he grew up in early ’60s North Dakota, when a boy reached a certain age, the guys in the surrounding blocks—which were comprised of a number of his relatives—lined up a Ford and a Chevy as teaching aids. They taught young Royce how the Ford engine was smaller and lighter but produced excellent power and was therefore more efficient. They showed him the safety features that might save his future family. They pointed out just how much faster the Ford could be. Yeah, there was some bias, but the passion of those elders spilled into the young man, which he has held onto for life. That’s especially true with hot rods and custom cars; there’s never been one built that didn’t require some alterations after the shakedown run. You just gotta drive ’em to find the flaws—and you can quote us on that. By the time you read this, we will have decided the rules for next year’s competition, but right now things are very much up in the air. Will we hold over the same successful format as 2011, or will we change it up to keep readers excited, and competitors inventive? It’s a win-win either way, but irrespective of that, I’m more stoked about who might submit an application, and what they might bring. Heck, even if you’ve got better-than-average resources from your great job, some of the high-end machines in mags can really demolish your ego. We’re regular guys like you, not captains of industry, tycoons, or pro athletes, so we wondered, what do other regular guys like us build, and how do they do it with resources other than cubic dollars? While nobody is denying that there’s just something unbelievably heroic about how Ed Iskendarian ground his own camshafts, and how Vic Edelbrock Sr. invented the concept of aftermarket intake manifolds, the true legacy of hot rodding’s early pioneers wasn’t so much their fabrication abilities, but rather their foresight and business savvy to bring mass-produced performance parts to a power-starved public. Decades later, the crate engine formula merely takes the notion of easy, over-the-counter horsepower to the next level.15 Hottest Crate Motors - Click & Buy |
